William C. Shaner, Jr., 88, of Ridley Park, died November 9, 2013 at the Crozer-Keystone Hospice Residence at Taylor Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William C. and Elsie Boland Shaner. Bill lived in Narberth prior to moving to his late residence 62 years ago.
After graduating from Overbrook High School in 1943, Bill served in the Navy during World War II. After being discharged from the Navy, Bill attended Temple University. At the end of his junior year at Temple, he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. He received his B.A. from Temple in 1953.
Mr. Shaner was employed by Sun Oil Company in Marcus Hook after graduation. In the Analytical Department of Research and Development, he took part in the development of analytical methods to support the other departments of research and development. When the petroleum industry began to produce unleaded gasoline, he helped develop a method for the rapid automated determination of lead in gasoline at the parts per million level. After thirty years in R&D, he moved to the Refinery Laboratory, which performs specification tests of incoming materials and outgoing products. He retired from Sun Oil in 1991. Bill also was a licensed amateur radio operator. His call sign was KB3ILH.
Bill was the brother of the late Mahlon R. Shaner and Elsie M. Harvey.
Survivors: his wife of 62 years, Louise Schatz Shaner, father of William R. Shaner (Melanie), Carl F. Shaner, Catharine L. Shaner (Albert Kalbach), John C. Shaner (Barbara) and David H. Shaner, and as well six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
