Walter William Kostyk
Devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather
Walter William Kostyk, 79, contentedly passed away February 13 in the house that his late brothers John, Mike, and Nick tirelessly helped him build.
Walter was born on the family farm in Tylersport, PA in 1934, the youngest of eleven children. He often recalled with great fondness how his siblings caringly looked after him when he lost his father at an early age.
He was predeceased by his father Hnot and mother Mary (Plachetko), his three brothers, and sisters Rose (Walter), Kate (Guzek), Sophie (Rest), Olga (Riper), and Anne (Kowall).
He attended Ridley High School and Pennsylvania Institute of Technology, then served in the US Navy and Naval Reserve. He was a patternmaker at Piasecki Aircraft, then a stagebuilder at Sun Shipbuilding. It was at Sun that he worked on the Hughes Glomar Explorer project, which he considered the high point of his career. He retired from the Philadelphia Naval Base in 2000.
He belonged to the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chester, PA, where he met his wife, Dolores. He lived his entire adult life in Ridley Park. His humble, quiet bearing was complemented by an iron resolve and seemingly limitless capacity for work. He planned and performed major home improvement projects with both sons, despite working full time. He never complained, except when his family pressed him to take the rare vacation from work. He very much enjoyed attending his grandsons' games and activities. He will be remembered for the stability, devotion, and industriousness he exhibited himself and gifted his family with.
Survivors: Devoted wife of 55 years Dolores (Shereba), son Walter of Dimock, PA; son William and wife Kimberly of Ridley Park, his three grandsons Stephen, Andrew, and Aaron; sisters Edna (Mielcarek) and Helen (Hagan), and many nieces and nephews.
