After battling complications from Parkinson's disease and dementia, Vasilios Nikolaos Kehagias of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on January 3, 2022, in the loving presence of his family and parish priest. He is survived by his cherished wife of fifty years, Irini; daughter Androniki (Niki) Kehagias Rentoulis; grandson Vasilios; son-in-law Nikolaos (Niko) Rentoulis; sisters Erini Polites, Maria Zaranois, Angeliki Strimbakos; brother Konstantinos Kehagias; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceased by brothers Vayos Kehagias and George Kehagias and sister Yiannoula Mparas, and parents Androniki and Nikolaos Kehagias.
Vasilios was born in Mouzaki, Greece, and raised in the small village of Vasilika Farsalon until he was in 6th Grade. Then the family moved again into the City of Volos, Greece. There his parents instilled in him the values, traditions, and faith that would come to define his life. In pursuit of the American dream, Vasilios immigrated to Wilmington, Delaware, with his wife Irini in 1971. He quickly became a carpenter to save money and start a family business. A decade after their arrival in America, Vasilios and Irini bought a home and opened Irini's Originals on the first floor, a local staple for bridal gowns. For over forty years, they worked side-by-side and expanded their small store into a fruitful business that he proudly passed on to Niki and Niko.
Although Vasilios was passionate about business, there was nothing more important to him than his faith and family. He was a loving husband and dedicated father to Niki. Vasilios passed on his culture and traditions as an active member of Holy Trinity (Wilmington, DE) and St. George (Media, PA) Greek Orthodox churches. He returned to Greece each year and ensured that Niki would understand her roots. When Vasilios became grandfather to his namesake Vasilios, he embraced his new role as 'PAPOU" with great enthusiasm. You could often find Vasilios at Greek School; soccer practices; Greek School dance classes; and in the front row at school events and sports games-making new friends with other parents and grandparents over a cup of coffee.
Public services will be held at St. George Media Greek Orthodox Church on Friday January 7 with a viewing from 9:00-10:45am immediately followed by a remembrance liturgy and burial in Edgewood Memorial Park. Friends and relatives are also invited to attend a luncheon at the conclusion of the burial to celebrate Vasilios life at St. George's church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Donations can be mailed to 30 E Forge Rd, Media, PA 19063 or sent via Venmo: @StGeorgeMedia "in memory of Vasilios Kehagias".
