Obituary

Susan E. Thompson (nee Brown), 57, of Norwood, died of cancer at Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester on the morning of Monday, July 18, 2016. She was born in Springfield, MA, to the late Robert and Marlene Brown on July 25, 1958.

Susan, whose friends and loved ones called her "Sue", traveled the world in her youth. Her father's career required international travel, so before she had graduated from high school, Sue had lived in Baghdad for two years as well as numerous cities in Europe, visiting an array of embassies in the process.

A lifelong baseball fan, Sue was an ardent supporter of the Boston Red Sox, holding out hope through much of her life that the team would win a World Series after an 86-year drought. Even after moving to the Philadelphia area in her early 20s, she maintained her fire for the Sox. When the Red Sox finally won World Series in 2004, Sue erupted with joy. She did it again when the team won the Series in 2007 and 2013.

Sue was also an avid music fan and reader, amassing a huge collection of books and CDs over the years. She always ready with a recommendation. Sue attended the Philadelphia Folk Festival every year she could.

A graduate of the Technical High School in Springfield, MA, Sue worked in a number of different jobs over the years. From the restaurants in which she waited tables to the offices where she handled administrative duties, Sue brought energy and passion to everything she did. Sue also was more than happy to boost the mood at work with an infectious laugh or a funny story. In recent years, she returned to school to refresh her professional skills. Into her 50s, Sue enrolled at Delaware County Community College and earned her Associates Degree in human resources.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Marlene Thompson and son-in-law, Matt D. Wilson, of Asheville, N.C; longtime partner, Jack T. Shields of Norwood; former husband, Charles Thompson of Bryn Mawr; brother, James Brown and sister-in-law, Rebecca Brown of Pinole, California and their two children; Jack's sons, Matt, Patrick and Adam; and Jack's eight grandchildren.
