Sotirios "Sam" Hartas, 70, of Chester, fell asleep in the Lord on March 3, 2023. Born in Patras, Greece, he was the son of the late Spiros and Stavroula Karabelas Hartas.
Sam was a star midfielder on Patreas, a Greek amateur league soccer team and served in the Greek Army from 1973 to 1975. He emigrated to the United States in 1975 and lived in Chester. He worked at various Greek restaurants around the region, including the well-known Village Restaurant in Swarthmore. Sam was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and enjoyed local travel, especially to the Jersey Shore. Sam was easy to get along with and lived a simple life, he touched many people by his joking demeanor and with his light-hearted pranks to make others laugh. Later in life, Sam was meticulous in his daily routine of feeding birds that would flock to his front yard. It was no secret that Sam relished good food, particularly cuisine with chicken, he also was an avid fan of the Philadelphia 76ers and Phillies.
Sam was the beloved brother of Giota Giannopoulos (late Antonios), Harry Hartas, Fotios Hartas (Giota), Altani Papapetridis (Paul), Andreas Hartas, Maria Spiridakos and George Hartas, and is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members, both in the United States and in Greece.
Funeral Service 11 AM Monday, March 13, 2023 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 30 E. Forge Rd., Media, PA 19063 where relatives and friends may call after 10 AM. Burial Chester Rural Cemetery.
