Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth Barton McPhillimy, 88

Retired Sun Lab Employee

Sarah Elizabeth Barton McPhillimy, 88, died August 12, 2011 at her home, of close to 20 years, White Horse Village in Newtown Square. She formerly lived in Glen Mills until shortly after the death of her husband, William L. McPhillimy, in 1991, when she moved to White Horse.

Sallie (Betty) was born in Chester July 12, 1923 to Gilbert C. and Anna M. Royds Barton. She graduated from Chester High School in 1941. Prior to going to work at the lab of Sun Oil Refinery in Marcus Hook she had been employed at Sears in Chester and a local bank in Norwood, PA.
After marrying Bill in 1943, their first home was Sacramento, CA. At the conclusion of WWII, they moved to Prospect Park, then Glenolden, and later, their favorite spot, Cambridge Downs in Glen Mills.

Born and raised in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, she had been active in the young married people group and sang in the choir. Quite a few people began their married lives together after Sallie's solos. St. Timothy's Lutheran Church was to be her church in later years.

Sallie will be remembered for her work with the Riddle Hospital Fair and the auxiliary of White Horse Village. She enjoyed traveling, particularly in Northern Europe. Painting had been a long time love and many homes are graced with her oil and water colors. Sculpture of clay had become another fancied media. Sal's artistic interest really was caught up in scale miniatures. She won a number of prizes and awards for her 1" and 1/2" work.

Survivors: She never had children, but made up for it by "adopting" her many nephews and nieces. She always gave so much of herself to her siblings and their spouses; Helen Larkin (late Richard), John Barton (Peggy) and the late Janet Coombes (late Harold), also survived by her nieces and nephews; James and David Larkin, Mary D. Taylor, Janet, Ginger, Theresa, Lorraine and Harold, John Barton, Jr., Joy Rybacki and Beth Hullinger.

Visitation: after 9:30 AM at the church

Burial: Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill

Memorial Gifts: may be made to The Reserve Fund c/o White Horse Village, 535 Gradyville Road, Newtown Square, PA 19073 or the above church.
