Raymond James Condren died unexpectedly on June 8. He was 81 years old and a resident of Swarthmore for more than 45 years. Ray was raised in South Orange, NJ and was the oldest of the three children of Maurice and Jeanette Condren. He and his wife of 55 years, Doris, met as teenagers and married on Valentine's Day in 1959.
After serving in the US Army and graduating from Seton Hall College, Ray was a Sales manager at Hess Oil for 13 years. He then started his own wholesale heating equipment business, Swarthmore Enterprises located on S. Princeton Avenue. After selling his company, he started another business, also in Swarthmore, The Little Jobber, which he ran for ten years before his retirement.
Ray was always very active in community life. He was a member of Swarthmore Rotary for many years serving as President in 1979-80. He also served as Treasurer of The Community Arts Center in Wallingford. Ray was a familiar presence in town, often seen at the library, the hardware store, the Co-op or on the Swarthmore College campus. He always attended his son Ray's football games, his daughter Amy's dance performances and he enjoyed volunteering alongside of Doris .
A man of wide-ranging interests, his hobbies included, drawing, bird-watching, gardening, sports and corresponding. An avid reader, he formed a book club which met weekly at the Village Restaurant.
Ray also had a passion for travel. He took two solo cross country motor cycle trips, riding his Harley-Davidson, first from Pennsylvania to California and then from Pennsylvania to Arizona. He and his wife Doris visited 48 of the 50 States. He also traveled to Africa, the Far East and Ireland.
He is survived by his wife Doris, his two children, Amy Budinger (Philip) and Raymond (Julie) and four grandchildren, Kelly, Jackson Faith, Anna Ray and Raymond III.
The family will welcome visitors from 5 to 7 pm on Friday evening, June 13 at White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 311 N. Swarthmore Avenue, Ridley Park, PA 19078. A funeral service will be held 10 AM Saturday, June 14 at Trinity Church, 301 N. Chester Road, Swarthmore , PA 19081
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Swarthmore Public Library.
