Rachel M. Bateman Irvine, 85, of Aston died April 2, 2017 at Crozer Keystone Hospice at Taylor. Born in Chester, she was the daughter of the late John P. Bateman and Marie F. Mutter Bateman and resided in Brookhaven all her life, before moving to her late residence in 2009.
Rachel was a graduate of Media High School, class of 1949 and was employed at Baldwin Locomotive as a secretary from 1949-1963 and Sears, Granite Run Retail Sales, before retiring in 1991. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church, where Rachel volunteered and served on many committees including knitting prayer shawls and hats for the prayer shawl ministry. She was previously a member of Providence Avenue U.M. Church and St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Rachel was a member of the Brookhaven and Aston Seniors, where she served on many committees, as well. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society of Garnet Valley. Rachel loved her dog, Molly, and enjoyed attending school and outside activities for her grandchildren.
Rachel was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, James C. Irvine, Jr., who died March 9, 2010; and her siblings, John E. Bateman and Bella Lawrence
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Edward Gane, with whom she made her home and her grandsons, Kevin, Brian and Matthew
Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Reformation Lutheran Church, 102 W. Rose Tree Road, Media, PA 19063, where friends may call from 9:00-10:15 AM
Burial: 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Mt. Hope Cemetery
At Rachel's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the above church would be preferred
