Obituary

Panagiota (Peggy) Kostomite was born in Hatipi Sparta, Greece and peacefully departed this world on May 14th, 2025 surrounded by her family.  She was the youngest of four children born to Petros and Maria Vekrakos.   Her early life in Greece was centered on the family's orange and olive grove businesses.  This is where she developed her passion for agriculture.   She would keep this passion for her entire life, always growing vegetables and working in her garden.  Even later in life when she needed the assistance of a cane she could be spotted outside trimming hedges or planting flowers.  She made a difficult decision to Emigrate to the US in 1961 under the sponsorship of her godfather.   She knew the United States would offer her endless opportunities.  There she met and married the love of her life Peter Kostomite in Feb 1962 and settled in Drexel Hill, PA where she had resided for 63 years.

She is survived by her two beloved daughters, Peggy (Art) and Maria (John) along with her cherished grandchildren Vanessa, Nicholas and Petrina.

The loves of her life were centered on family, her beloved St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and the United States.   She was a lifetime member of the Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope.  She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and was deeply involved in helping to raise her grandchildren.   At a time when most women her age were slowing down, she was again changing diapers, reading nursery stories and piling the kids into the wagon and going to a hilly area in the neighborhood that they affectionately called yiayia's mountain. She was devoted to her faith and she spent many hours preparing homemade pastries for the church's annual festival.   She did not seek the spotlight but was always willing to do whatever was needed to help the church.   She enjoyed discussing politics with her grandson and had a keen interest in world events.   Later in life, she would attend different events for her grandchildren at their church but would always remind everyone that her heart belonged to St Demetrios Church.

She is predeceased by her husband and in addition to her immediate family, she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Her viewing will be held on Monday May 19th at 10AM at St. Demetrios Church with funeral services at 11AM.   Interment will be at Fernwood Cemetery,  In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 229 Powell Ln, Upper Darby Township, PA 19082.

She was truly one of a kind lady that can never be replaced and we as her family will always treasure everything that she brought to our lives.
