Nancy Day (nee Chartier), of Sharon Hill, PA, died peacefully surrounded by her children, at Crozer Chester Medical Center, on February 27, 2021, at the age of 71.
Born in Chester and raised in Milmont Park, Nancy graduated from Ridley High School, class of 1967, and attended Widener and DCCC. She lived in Sharon Hill for over 50 years. She was employed by the County of Delaware in the Office of Human Services for over 30 years, while also serving as Director of Information & Referral Services, and as the first Director of the Del. Co Women's Commission since its inception in 1980 until her retirement in 2008. Nancy also brought her integrity, care, and clarity to her leadership roles throughout the County, including: past President of the Interboro Chapter of Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW), and founding board member of Del. Co. Women's Conference. She held elected office on Sharon Hill Borough Council and as former President of the Southeast Delco School Board. She served as former Vice-President of the Del. Co. Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), which she co-founded with Debra Rubin in the late 1970's. Nancy was honored as BPW's Woman of the Year and her life work was recognized by the Delaware County Women's Commission as their 2012 Woman of Achievement. Nancy shined when working creatively and collaboratively in service of her community, challenging the status quo, and guiding people through challenges towards empowerment and growth. Nancy was a staunch advocate for those in need and a fervent activist for social, educational, and economic equity. As a trailblazer, collaborator, networker, and leader, she was able to create real, definable change and improved quality of life for women and families across the county.
With grit, grace, and humor, Nancy always found the way forward, always found a way to meet and learn from life's experiences, and she shared that wisdom and positive encouragement with others. Even after a long recuperation from a car accident at age 58 which challenged her mobility and caused her to have to retire early, she continued to give back to her community and nurture the lives of her loving and growing family. This self-described "lady of leisure" spent her free time enjoying watercolor painting, traveling, outings with friends and the Red Hat Society, concerts and musical theater, sharing life, laughter, and good food every Friday night with her family. Nancy filled her Sharon Hill home with her artwork and memorabilia from her amazing life journey, especially butterflies, which represented her ability to overcome life's difficult challenges and transform and thrive.
She is survived by her treasured children, Kelley Day and Christopher Day; her proud father Wilford Chartier; and her supportive sisters, Debra Smith (Frank) and Denise Robinson. Nancy's life was enriched by her nieces and nephews, Matt Smith (Christine), Greg Robinson (Anne), Amanda Frett (Joe), and Kimberley Robinson, and her 6 grandnieces and grandnephews. She is also survived by her chosen grandchildren, Wyatt Urban, Morgan Urban, Abigail Gopal, Jacob Gopal and Vera Urban, and countless friends. In her later years, added joy was brought to Nancy's life by the companionship of her loving shelter dog, Buttons. Nancy is predeceased by her loving mother, Gladys Chartier (nee Hall).
We all have been touched by Nancy's beautiful living spirit through the years, and her powerful influence ripples out through all she put her heart and soul into. She left things better than she found them. May our memories of her strength, brilliance, humor, courage, and loving nature continually bless us all.
We will gather in memory of Nancy sometime in the future when we are able to do so safely. In lieu of flowers, due to her unexpected death, the family is humbly requesting donations; your financial contribution will assist Nancy's daughter Kelley with memorial costs, unanticipated costs and expenses, and ongoing support and care for Nancy's adult son, Chris, who lives with chronic disabilities.
