Mildred McCowan Butler (Milly) died peacefully on June 25, 2026 at home at the age of 93, surrounded by family. Born in Upland and raised in Swarthmore, Mrs. Butler lived in Aston since 1962 until she moved to Maris Grove in Glen Mills. She was a substitute teacher for the Penn Delco School District. Later, she was a customer service coordinator for Allen Sherman Hoff.
Mrs. Butler was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church as a former church schoolteacher and superintendent, along with being the Episcopal Church Women’s President, Pre-School Committee co-chairman, Fellowship Chairman, and Vestry member.
A graduate of Penn State, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, served as the president of the Women’s Recreation Association, and served on the All-University Cabinet.
She was president of the Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae Philadelphia West Suburban Chapter and served as Membership Chairman for many years.
Milly also volunteered her time and services to the Girl Scouts of Delaware County as a leader & Service Unit Director, and was a long standing “critter maker” for the Brandywine River Museum. She was a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association and active member on committees at Bryn Mawr Rehab Art Ability Shows and Zembo Shrine Harrisburg Region Legionettes.
At Maris Grove, she was a member of the Penn State Club and was treasurer of the German/American Club.
Mrs. Butler was the wife of the late Charles S. Butler, daughter of the late Frank H. and Anna Senf McCowan, and mother of the late Connie Butler Long. She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Karen Butler of Charlotte, NC, a son, Chuck Butler of Rochester, MI (Karla), along with four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM on August 8 at Resurrection Episcopal Church, 2131 Mount Rd, Aston, PA 19014. Visitation will begin at 10AM.
