Mary Anne Mullany (nee Biemesderfer), 94 of Ridley Park died on April 17, 2026 at Riddle Village in Media. The cause was complications related to dementia. Born in Lancaster, the daughter of the late Stanley Q. and Kathryn Leed Biemesderfer, she had been a resident of Ridley Park since 1972.
Mary was a graduate of McCaskey High School and then graduated from the Hospital of the University Pennsylvania (HUP) School of Nursing. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Neumann University. From primary school through to her BSN she achieved academic honors, including receiving the award for the highest average in her class at the HUP School of Nursing. She and Michael used that prize money to help pay for their wedding. She enjoyed a 40+ career as a Registered Nurse, including 20 years in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before retiring in 1997. After her retirement she maintained relationships with the doctors and nurses from the NICU, and, especially, the families whose babies she had cared for.
Mary was an avid Phillies fan, always enjoying her trips to Spring Training and to the ballparks, from Shibe Park to Connie Mack Stadium, to Veterans Stadium and finally Citizens Bank Park. She first acquired her love of baseball from her father – they went to see the Lancaster Red Roses minor league team in her childhood, and her Dad came to Philadelphia often to go to Phillies games with her. Mom took all six of her children to games at Veterans Stadium during their childhoods – staying to the end of every game.
Mary also enjoyed travel, including multiple trips with the Roads Scholar organization, both nationally and internationally. Among her favorite trips were those to Israel, a lifelong dream trip, Spain and America’s national parks. Her daughter Mary and her son Dave were frequent travelers with her in her later years. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren on intergenerational trips with Roads Scholar – always selecting trips with special meaning for each grandchild. She went on over 20 of those trips. Mary loved opera and classical music and attended many orchestra, chamber music and operatic concerts. Mostly, she enjoyed spending time with family, including many trips to visit grandchildren as far away as California, Colorado, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and as close to home as Springfield and Warminster.
Mary was a member of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church in the last 10-15 years of her life.
For the last 15 years of her life, Mary dealt with dementia that robbed her of many of these pleasures. She remained strong and resilient, and never lost the ability to recognize friends and family.
Both before, and especially after her retirement she enjoyed life with daughter Mary, traveling, and going to the Symphony, concerts and opera, Phillies games and more. As she battled dementia and other illnesses her daughter Mary served as her caregiver. Mary provided the way for her to remain in her home as long as possible. Even in her last days she was comforted by Mary’s care. Her family also appreciates the care she was given at Monticello House at Riddle Village and by Caring Hospice.
She was the loving wife of the late Michael J. Mullany, Jr., mother of Anne Boncyk (Wayne), Mary J. Mullany, Mike Mullany (DJ), Joe Mullany (Kelli), Dave Mullany (Mary T.) and the late Stephen Mullany. She was the sister of the late Stanley Q. Biemesderfer Jr., Jeanne Schnelli (late Bill) and James Biemesderfer. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, David, Mark and Molly Boncyk, Ben and Abby Mullany, Kurt Wheeler (Alicia), Syd Mullany, and Matt Mullany, as well as two great-grandchildren, Noah and Annabelle Wheeler and many nieces and nephews.
