Mary J. Beldecos, aged 93, left us peacefully on September 8, 2023. Mary was born in Chester, PA and was the daughter of the late Demetrios and Cleopatra Beldecos. She lived in Springfield, PA for much of her life. Mary is survived by her sister and best friend, Helen J. Beldecos, also of Springfield, PA. She will be dearly missed by her sister and countless cousins, godchildren, extended family members, lifelong friends, and caregivers. Predeceased by her beloved and faithful friends and sisters of the heart, Marian G. Varlan, Calliope Varlan and Ruth G. Varlan.
Mary was a graduate of Chester High School and continued her education at Widener University (BA) and Temple University (MA). She started her professional career leading the Business/Finance Department at Rogers Department Store in Chester, PA. Mary then went on to become a dedicated High School Business Teacher; teaching at both Upper Darby High School and Interboro High School. Mary was a passionate and dedicated teacher who always put her students first.
Mary was also a devoted member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Media, PA (formerly located in Chester, PA). She was a member of the St. George Liturgical Choir where she sang every Sunday. She also enjoyed attending the yearly choir conference alongside her sister Helen. Mary held various officer positions on the St. George Parish Council, including President (1992-1993). She was a member of the St. George CHION Society and a lifelong member of the St. George Philoptochos Society where she held various officer positions. In addition to her leadership to the church community, she could always be found working tirelessly in the kitchen preparing the many Greek delights and desserts for the annual Greek Food Festival.
Throughout her lifetime, Mary continually devoted her time and talents to support philanthropic projects and functions. Many would agree that she was a quiet force who valued servant leadership; always giving more than she took. In 2013, Mary was honored by the Metropolitan of New Jersey for her contributions to the philanthropic ministries of the Greek Orthodox Community where she was a symbol of selfless service and devotion.
Mary continued to cultivate her philanthropic values when she was initiated into the Daughters of Penelope Laodice #246 on April 22, 1951 along with her sister Helen J. Beldecos. Over the years, she served many positions in the chapter including District 4 Governor (1976 to 1978) and District Treasurer. She was also a member of the Board of Directors for the Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc; serving as Treasurer multiple times.
In her free time, Mary was always on the go. She rarely slowed down until more recently with a decline in her health. She enjoyed volunteering for the Rose Valley Chorus, Philadelphia sports, musical concerts, theater productions, cooking, baking, and traveling. Her most cherished time was spent with her sister Helen, family, and friends. Mary exemplified an Orthodox Christian who lived everyday rooted in her faith.
