Marion Kimball Purdy longtime Swarthmore resident, most recently of White Horse Village in Newtown Square, PA, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2018 at the age of 88.
Born in Evanston, IL to Ronald and Marion Thayer Kimball, Marion grew up in Evanston, was a graduate of the Evanston public schools, attended North Shore Country Day, and Vassar College. In 1950 Marion met the love of her life, Roger Purdy, on the MV Georgic sailing en route to Europe; they wed the following year. Roger's employment with the General Electric Company brought them to Schenectady, NY, Cincinnati, OH, and Erie, PA before settling in Swarthmore in 1967. Marion moved to White Horse Village in 2012.
Marion was active in many organizations and was well known throughout the community. She was very dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America, the Swarthmore United Methodist Church, and several local and global preservation societies. Marion was also proud to receive the following honors: the Anna Estes Strawbridge Honor Roll for the League of Women Voters, an American Heart Association fundraising award, and an 8th grade citizenship award from the Sons of the American Revolution.
Beloved by family, countless neighbors and friends, Marion's outgoing personality was infectious to everyone she met. She was also an avid learner, well-read in American history, and passionate about local, state and federal politics. Marion brought boundless energy and a strong spirit everywhere she went; her memorable laugh warmed the hearts of all who knew her. She relished travelling all over the world and living life to its fullest. Marion was a loyal friend and dutiful correspondent — writing many letters every day to friends far and wide.
Marion was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Thayer and Charles; her husband, Roger; and her son Frederick. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Diane Purdy of Glenside, PA; daughter Caroline Paulus of Nottingham, PA; son Henry (Carolina) Purdy of Cincinnati, OH; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 11am, at the Swarthmore United Methodist Church, 129 Park Ave, Swarthmore, PA 19081.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Swarthmore United Methodist Church or The American Heart Association.
