Obituary

After a six-week struggle following a major stroke, Louis Subashi, 69, passed away on November 29th at Paoli Hospital surrounded by his wife and children.

Lou was predeceased by his parents, Aristea Kasapi and Nicola Subashi, who both immigrated to the United States from Albania in the 1930s. He is also predeceased by his beloved brother Andrew, who passed away in 2008.

Lou grew up in Ridley Park and graduated from Ridley Park High School in 1959, where he played basketball and football and once pitched a no-hitter for the baseball team. He attended Wagner College on Staten Island for two years and was drafted and stationed in Germany where he served two years as a member of the military police. Lou graduated from Cheney University where he obtained a teaching certificate in Social Studies, and worked in the Chester-Upland School District for nearly thirty years teaching history, social studies, and geography at Smedley Middle School.

Lou coached soccer for twenty years. His coaching career began in Chester where he coached JV and Varsity Boys Soccer at Chester High School in the 1980s before the program was dropped. He was the assistant coach of the Strath Haven High School Girls Soccer Central League Champs in the early 1990s and also coached soccer for the Nether Providence Athletic Association.

Some would say that Lou's claim to fame however, was selling hot dogs at the 75th Street beach in Sea Isle City, NJ for almost 30 years, where he served literally thousands of people from throughout the Delaware Valley. Lou was especially proud of his hot dog rolls, freshly baked daily at a bakery, which cannot be revealed as it is a trade secret. Lou dubbed his rolls, "the best buns West of Madrid." If you have never had a Lou Dog, we are sorry for your loss but encourage you to join the Lou Dogs Facebook Fan Page.

Lou loved to golf. He was an avid Phillies fan. He also loved to travel and recently took trips to Italy, Spain, Germany, Palm Springs, and Florida.

Lou is survived by his wife of 38 years, Melody Price Subashi, his son, Christian, daughters, Carly and Dana, and sons-in-law Sean Albright and Adam Marcus. He is also survived by two granddaughters who adored him – Haley and Molly; and his siblings, Magdalin Subashi MacGregor (Robert) of South Dartmouth, MA, Michael Stephano (Beth) of Youngsville, Ohio, Denis Stephano of Aston, and Betty Subashi of Milmont Park.

Visitation will be on Friday evening at the White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 311 N. Swarthmore Avenue, Ridley Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Burial will take place on Saturday morning at 10:30 at Fernwood Cemetery. Donations in Lou's honor can be made to the Nether Providence Athletic Association, 311 E. Baltimore Avenue, Media, PA 19063.
