Obituary

Joseph J. "Joe" McHenry, 62, of Prospect Park, was stricken suddenly and died on September 20, 2016, on his way home from a trip with his wife to Ireland. Joe and his wife Kate traveled to Ireland as the first of many trips they planned as he started his retirement.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Florence McHenry and the late Joseph J. McHenry, Sr., who died in 1983. Joe grew up in Northeast Philadelphia, and resided in Chester before moving to his late residence 33 years ago.

Joe was the oldest of five children and graduated from Holy Ghost Preparatory School and LaSalle University. He started his government career in 1979 as a clerk for the Defense Personnel Support Center in Philadelphia. Joe continued in various assignments, rising to his position as Specialist in Acquisition/Supply for the Defense Logistics Agency. He managed the supply of materials and equipment to soldiers in various military conflicts around the world. Joe also supplied military personnel and FEMA during natural disasters. He received numerous awards during his 36 years with the government before retiring in March 2015.

Joe was a member of St. Gabriel R.C. Church and the Federal Managers Association. As his children grew, Joe joined them as their coach in baseball, softball and soccer at Prospect Park Youth Club and Interboro Soccer Club. He also worked in numerous other volunteer roles in Prospect Park, from selling 50-50 tickets for his church to cutting people's lawns and lending a helping hand wherever he could help. As friends and relatives gathered this week, they remembered what they found to be his most important quality – his selfless devotion to others.
