John Donald Warrington, 84, died on August 25, 2024. He was the son of the late Mina (Shorty) and Helen Sparklin Warrington. Don grew up in Essington and raised his family there, where he resided until moving to his daughter;s home in Garnet Valley 20 years ago.
Don graduated from Ridley Township High School in 1958, where he was a member of the soccer team. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a former member of St John's Tinicum Lutheran Church. He was also a member and past president of the Norwood Lions Club, and belonged to the Delaware County Tavern Owners Association. Don was a Lifetime member of Riverside Yacht Club.
As a young man, Don was employed by Westinghouse.
Together with his wife Babs, he owned and operated Don's Bar in Essington for 32 years. The business sponsored many softball, dart, pool and bowling teams throughout the years, and many customers became lifelong friends.
Don enjoyed family time with his wife and children at their summer home in Angola Beach, especially the meals of fresh crabs and clams expertly prepared by his wife.
Don was a reliable presence at his grandchildren's football, baseball, hockey games and track events; sometimes traveling across the country to attend. When his grandsons played football at Garnet Valley, Don loved his role as unofficial "water boy", providing Gatorade and water to players before every game. He was a member of the Garnet Valley Football Fifth Quarter Club. When the boys played football for West Chester University, Don and Babs hosted Thursday night dinners for the team. He was affectionately known as "Pop" by all the student athletes.
Don made friends everywhere he went! He enjoyed breakfast with "the regulars " at Chi Cafe, and was a favorite of the waitresses there. On Fridays and Saturdays he could usually be found greeting friends from his spot on the bench outside of Rebecca's in Booth's Corner.
