John J. "Jack" McDermott of Swarthmorewood, PA formerly of Darby, PA entered into eternal life on October 14, 2016. He was sixty-three years old.
He is survived by his loving wife Karen (Slackway) McDermott, five devoted children- Erin, John Jr., Ryan, Nick & Emily, and his ferocious companion, Claude. He is also survived by siblings Mary-Ellen & Paul Kohser, Jim & Kathy McDermott, Michael McDermott, Fran & Meg McDermott, Tom & Carol McDermott, Kate McDermott, Patti & George Sioma, Sue & Mike Zoltowski, Chuck Slackway and many nieces & nephews. He was welcomed into eternal life by his parents, Jim & Doris McDermott, his parents-in-law, Charlie & Wilma Slackway, and his sisters, JoAnn & June McDermott.
Born December 25, 1952, Jack graduated from Darby-Colwyn High School & has spent the past 44 years working as a railroader, most recently employed by Amtrak. Jack was a devout Catholic & member of Notre Dame de Lourdes/OLP parish. He was in attendance for mass said by Pope Francis at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in 2015.
Also a former member of the AOH, he was very proud of his Irish heritage. Jack was an avid & accomplished golfer who even shot a hole in one. He was a dedicated fan of Philadelphia sports teams. He got to watch the Eagles lose a Super Bowl and the Phillies win a World Series in person. Jack loved to entertain with a story or a joke and everyone else loved to listen & laugh.
Funeral Mass 11AM Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Notre Dame de Lourdes R.C. Church, Fairview Rd. and Michigan Ave., Swarthmore, PA.
Visitation 7 to 9PM Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 311 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ridley Park and 9:45 to 10:45AM Thursday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for Nick & Emily's college education.
