Obituary

John Kurkis, 91 of Wilmington, DE (formerly Aston, PA) passed away at home surrounded by his family on April 6, 2013.

Born in Philadelphia he spent his childhood in the Fairview section of Camden and West Philadelphia.

John attended Temple University before serving as a naval aviator during WWII. After the war he graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1949 where he played football and was a brother in the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

A life-long love of athletics kept John involved in his children's activities. To relax, he often bowled, golfed, played bridge, pinochle, poker and tennis with friends and family. John enjoyed grilling, gardening and family gatherings, where he told stories and kept everyone entertained.

He was an enduring fan of the Phillies, Eagles and Penn State Football.

As his four children grew up in the Penn Delco School District in the 60-70's, John helped form the Aston Antics (a PTL Variety Show) and presided over the Sun Valley Athletic Boosters.

He also served on the Aston Township planning commission and was a member of the Concord Lodge No. 625 F. & A.M.

John retired after 30 years from the Boeing Company in Ridley Park where he was the Manager of Engineering Estimating. After retiring in 1986, he enjoyed traveling with Dot as they followed the Spartanburg Phillies around the Carolina's. He also reveled in working on his computer and loved to create spreadsheets of just about anything.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy (Meck) Kurkis; his four children John (Sharon) of Roswell, GA, Beth (Walter) Perdue of West Chester, PA, Jeff (Tina) of Spartanburg, SC and Sandee (Chuck) McClain with whom he resided. "PopPop" loved his grandchildren; Greg Kurkis, Kelly McClain, Jesse and John C. Kurkis and will be remembered as a fun loving storyteller.

The family would like to thank the team of caregivers from Season's Hospice and Right at Home, especially Karen Brown for her love and laughter during his final months.

A celebration of life will be held in the Courtyard Room at the Concordville Inn on Friday, April 12, 2013.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by buffet lunch at 2:00. Interment will be private.

Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be donated in his memory to Season's Hospice of Delaware, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
