Obituary

John E. Carney, Sr., 94, formerly of Wallingford, died June 4, 2016 at his home in West Grove with his loving family by his side. Born in Chester, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Annie M. (Lavin) Carney and resided in Wallingford for 32 years before moving to his last residence in 2002.


John attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Chester and was a graduate of Chester High School, class of 1939. He studied at Columbia University and M.I.T and graduated from University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Civil Engineering, class of 1951. He went on to earn a MS in Civil Engineering from University of Pennsylvania. John served as a Lieutenant in the US Army for the Army Corp of Engineers during WWII in Japan. He was employed by Catalytic, Inc. as Chief, Civil, Structural and Architectural Engineer for 24 years before retiring. Following his retirement, John went on to teach engineering courses at Delaware Technical Community College for 8 years.


He was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers. John was a former president and life member of the Delaware County Chapter of the Penna. Society of Professional Engineers. He enjoyed golf, tennis, reading and traveling. John loved ballroom dancing and traveled to various dances in the tristate area. He was devoted to his home and his family.


John was predeceased by his siblings, Thomas Carney, Jr., Mary Basara, Helen McHale and Anthony "Tony" Carney.

Survivors: Vincenzina M. "Vinny" Sileo Carney, his wife of 56 years; father to Pamela A. Carney Butterfield (Kevin), John E. Carney, Jr. (Kathleen) and Kevin G. Carney (Kelley); also survived by 11 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.


Funeral Mass: 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at St. John Chrysostom R.C. Church, 615 S. Providence Road, Wallingford, PA 19086, where friends may call from 9:45-10:45 AM


Burial: SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery
