James Andrew Monaghan, Jr., 92, of Swarthmore died on January 5, 2022. Born in Upland, the son of the late James A. and Marguerite L. McKay Monaghan, he was raised in Chester and lived in Ridley Park before moving to Swarthmore 17 years ago.
James was a graduate of St. James High School, class of 1946 and received a BA in English from Villanova University. He also attended graduate school and also at Temple University for English. He was employed as a Buyer at the Boeing Company before retiring in 1994. As a child and young man, James was associated with the Clan Ross in Chester. He loved writing poems and limericks, that he enjoyed sharing with loved ones and acquaintances. James had a passion for music, and in his younger days traveled to Manhattan to see such illustrious performers as Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. At home James enjoyed listening to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and John Gary. James was also an avid reader and sports fan; especially of his beloved Villanova Wildcats. However, above all else, was his unwavering devotion to his adoring family.
He was the loving husband of 49 years to Mary Frances Kelly Monaghan who died on November 1, 2009, and brother of the late John V. Monaghan and Louise Kemske. James is survived by his sons Mark J. Monaghan (Corinne Holcomb) and Dr. Bruce A. Monaghan, M.D., his grandchildren Cecilia, Dylan, Grace, Elizabeth and Aidan and daughter-in-laws Karen Richards Monaghan and Lori Townsend Monaghan.
