On May 23 rd , Dr. Hamid Zangeneh passed away at home in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. Dr. Zangeneh had lived in Wallingford since 1985, when he moved there with his family to assume a position teaching economics at Widener University, his academic home for over thirty years.
Born in Iran to a large and close family, Dr. Zangeneh emigrated to the United States to further his studies. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia, his Master's degree from Ball State University, and his B.A. from Tehran Business College. His educational accomplishments are all the more extraordinary, as he was of the first generation in his family to attend university. He valued education and instilled a love of learning in his children. He spent much of his free time assisting his kids with their homework and recently, discussing his daughter Parisa's graduate research with her.
During his career, Dr. Zangeneh published extensively on macroeconomics, international politics, trade, and Islamic banking. Much of his work focused on Iran, his country of origin. Dr. Zangeneh shared his knowledge through lecturing widely and gave many television and radio interviews for outlets such as BBC Persian and Voice of America.
Dr. Zangeneh was deeply involved in the work of the Center for Iranian Research and Analysis and also served as the Editor of the Journal of Iranian Research and Analysis. He presented papers around the world and published, lectured, and gave interviews in both Persian and English. In addition, Dr. Zangeneh had a life-long interest in civil rights and participated in marches to show his support for social justice. He and his wife participated in the women's march in 2017.
At heart, Dr. Zangeneh was a family man whose devotion to family was legendary. Known for his generosity, kindness, and a willingness to share wisdom, he was always ready to have his family, friends, or his children's friends over for dinner. He could often be spotted walking the family dog, Rooba, around Swarthmore College or in his neighborhood.
In recent years, Dr. Zangeneh took the opportunity to travel abroad to visit places old and new. He traveled to Edinburgh, Montreal, London, Ireland, New York, Washington, D.C., and The Hague to see his daughter, Parisa. He also journeyed to Sweden, Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and around the United States to visit his siblings. In 2017, he went to South America with friends, where he visited Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Dr. Zangeneh was a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, academic, and friend, and he is irreplaceable. He is survived by his wife, Janice, two children, Parisa and Zach, his siblings and siblings-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
