George R. Smith, 90, formerly of Somers Point, NJ died on March 27, 2023. Born in Chester, the son of the late Warren and Mable Gross Smith, he moved to Somers Point in 1972. As a graduate of Chester High School class of 1949 and Williamson Trade School. George proudly served as a Corporal in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and was also a volunteer fireman with Franklin Fire Company #3.
George owned and operated his own company (George R. Smith Construction) but, was an avid Notre Dame fan. He loved to coach not only his family but all the children in the neighborhood as well. The most important thing to George however, was his family. He was the loving husband of the late Rose M. Grandizio Smith who died in 2017 after they celebrated sixty years of a happy marriage. George was the father of Rosemary Taylor (Terry) and Denise M. Smith, grandfather (Pop) to Terry Taylor, Jr. and Derrick Taylor, great-grandfather to Terry "Rocky" Taylor and brother of Arthur Smith and the late Marion Glover, Warren, Harvey, Frank and Robert "Bob" Smith.
