George C. Davis, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the age of 87 in the loving presence of his wife Shirley and daughter Susan in Roanoke, VA. A longtime resident of Tinicum Township and Delaware County, he and Shirley moved to Roanoke in 2010 to be closer to Susan and son-in-law Brian Black.
George was born August 16, 1924 and raised in Essington, PA, son of the late Alexander Davis and Jeanette Ludwig Davis. He graduated from Eddystone High School.
In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served in the Pacific theater on the USS Chilton during World War II as an Electrician's Mate. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After the war, George was employed by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation of Lester, PA where he met his wife of 60 years Shirley (nee Moore). He retired from Westinghouse in 1986 after 43 years.
Always active in his community, George served as Commissioner of Tinicum Township and on the Sewer Authority and Civil Service Commission. In his younger days, he was a volunteer firefighter. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 60 year Mason in Prospect Lodge #578.
George was a devoted family man and always willing to help relatives, friends, and neighbors. He was a generous supporter of many charities.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister Evelyn Davis Zimmerman of Essington, PA, his daughter Susan Davis Black (Brian) of Roanoke, VA, his granddaughter Jessica Tapp Firestone (Jonathan), nephews Joseph Zimmerman (Nancy) and George Zimmerman (Patty), and extended family.
Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 311 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ridley Park, PA
Visitation: relatives and friends may call after 12:00 noon at the funeral home
Burial: with military honors will follow at Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills, PA.
