Obituary

Fredrick E. Hammet Jr,, 92, of Ridley Park died on January 7, 2025 at his home.  Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Frederick Emrick and Aida Frances Cooper Hammet.

Fred was a graduate of Northeast High School, class of 1950 and was a proud veteran of the US Army having been drafted and served during the Korean War.  During his service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal,the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation.

Fred was employed as a Supervisor in the United States Postal Service for 33 years before retiring in 1990.  In his younger years, Fred enjoyed fishing and was an artist creating detailed pen and ink drawings. He was a member of the Orchid Society and spent many hours growing orchids in his greenhouse, and gardening, He loved animals and enjoyed having pets. Fred was a collector of many things, including stamps and First Day covers. He liked to keep remembrances of his life events in scrapbooks. He cared about people and world events and faithfully watched the 11 o'clock news daily. He loved to watch mysteries with a cup of tea and a cookie or a bowl of ice cream. He really enjoyed eating out, especially at the local diner. Fred dearly loved his girls and his cherished grandchildren.

He was the husband of the late Evelyn E. Cooney Hammet and the late Janet McDonough Hammet, father of Evelyn Hammet, Cynthia Lindsay (Ed) and Judith Hammet-Kelly (Chris), step-father of James Cooper, Margaret A. Yannuzzi, William H. Cooper II, and Thomas A. Cooper, brother of Lamar Hammet (Evelyn) and the late Elaine McCaffrey. He is also survived by grandchildren Christina (Joe), Ryan (Alyssa), Michael (Kristina), Megan (Andrew), Kevin, Rachel, Michael (Kim), eight great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Fred's life will take place at 11 AM Friday, January 17, 2025 at the White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 311 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ridley Park where relatives and friends may call after 10 AM.  Burial will follow in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts to any disabled veterans organization, or animal rescue organization such as Cat Angel Network https://catangel.org/base/ would be appreciated.
