Edward T. Thompson , 89, the Patriarch of Leedom Estates in Ridley Township, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at the Springfield Crossings and Rehabilitation Center, in Springfield, PA. He was born on October 30, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA to John and Lillian Thompson.
Edward grew up in South Philadelphia. He graduated from South Philadelphia High School in 1950. Edward enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951, during the Korean Conflict, serving as a radio operator on various ships, his most significant duty assignment being on the U.S. Yellowstone (Ad-27). Edward was Honorably Discharged in 1955, and decorated with the National Defense Service Medal and the Naval Occupation of Europe Service Medal.
Edward married the love of his life, Eleanor Groves Thompson in 1956, in Philadelphia, PA at Stella Maris Catholic Church. Soon thereafter, they moved from South Philadelphia to the suburbs of Leedom Estates. They were happily married for 57 years until her passing in 2013.
Edward was an active and proud civic member of his Leedom and Ridley communities. He was truly an O.G.: Original member / president of Leedom Little League, original member / coach / sponsor of Ridley Jr. ABA, original member of the Prospect Park Termites, original member of Nassau Swim Club and original member of the Ridley Football Boosters Organization.
Edward was long time employee of 5-Star Air Freight and DSI in the shipping business as the Director of International Operations and Sales until his retirement. He most enjoyed attending all of his children's and grandchildren's athletic events and dutifully followed them from community teams to Ridley High School teams and through collegiate play.
In his spare time he enjoyed following the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and the Midshipmen of the US Naval Academy. He was also an avid beer connoisseur, a budding on-line poker star and a card fanatic in general, playing weekly with the seniors at Ridley Park Borough Hall. He became a technology wizard specializing in Facetime, Instagram and texting his family at all hours of the day. He was known to take long rides to Lancaster and LBI to spend time with his wife.
All that he did, however, never surmounted who he was as a man, a husband, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather. He was kind and sweet. Patient and caring. Loving and supportive. Pensive and wise. Good natured and humorous. He was just an all-around good person, loved by all who came into contact with him.
Edward is survived by his five children: Barbara Chambers, Gary Thompson, Terri Thompson (Cherie), Brian Thompson (Debbie) and Glenn Thompson (Jane); his eight grandchildren Kelly and Kasey Chambers, Haley, Liam and Riley Thompson, Mikaila and Lily Thompson and Valerie Thompson; and three great grandchildren Jackson, Hayden and Maggie.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; his parents, John and Lillian Thompson; his brother, John Thompson and his sister, Lillian Hannigan.
