Obituary

Edith McFall, age 81, of Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, died peacefully on October 17, 2021 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, following a short illness.

Born Edith Lillian Freedman in 1940 in Washington, PA to Raymond A. Freedman and the former Miriam Weiss, she was a graduate of Trinity High School and Pennsylvania State University.  She started her journalism career as a reporter for United Press International in Harrisburg, where at least two things of monumental significance happened.  She was the only writer on duty the night of March 2, 1962, when, in Hershey, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors.  As such, the story that went out on the UPI wire that night was written by a short Jewish "lady reporter" who had never before (or since) seen a basketball game.  And she met Edward J. McFall, a fellow reporter at UPI, who would become her biggest fan and her husband of 38 years, until his death in 2000.

Throughout her long and varied career, she worked as an editor at TV Guide and at Andrews Publications, an advocate for women at the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, and a registrar at Pennsylvania Institute of Technology.

But it was through her dedication to her family, friends, neighbors and community that she became the Delaware County fixture known to all simply as "Edie."  A resident of Ridley Park for more than 50 years, Edie was the long-time Board president of the Ridley Park Library, a panelist for the Youth Aid Panel program, a member of the Delaware County Press Club, a Democratic committeewoman for Ridley Park Borough and later in her life, an active member and volunteer of Congregation Ohev Shalom.

Known for her quick wit and self-deprecating humor, Edie was a devoted mother who loved her family with a mixture of pride, bewilderment and exasperation.  She also loved fried oysters, Neil Diamond, Cape May, Diet Pepsi and dogs.

She is survived by her three children, Mary McFall Hopper of Ridley Park, Elizabeth (John) Leddy of Atlanta, GA, and Ray (Joanne) McFall of Springfield, PA; her sister Doris S. Freedman of Washington, DC; and her six grandchildren, Brandon and Timothy Hopper, Jessica and Colleen McFall, and Hayden and William Leddy.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, at White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 311 N. Swarthmore Ave, Ridley Park.  A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 21, 11:00 am, at Congregation Ohev Shalom, 2 Chester Rd, Wallingford, with a luncheon to follow at Springfield Country Club.  Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the organizations that Edie supported, such as Feeding America, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, or Planned Parenthood.  And, to honor her life's real passion, please always make sure to vote.
