Obituary

1922-2017

Dorothy M. Watts Paulley, 95, of Chester, died September 25, 2017 at Fair Acres Geriatric Center.   Born, raised and educated in the City of Chester, she was the daughter of the late Omar "Bob" Rosser and Marjorie McKniff Watts.

Dorothy was a member of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church for over 85 years.  She was employed by Sunship in Chester for several years during WWII.  From 1952-1978, Dorothy worked in the meat department of Acme Markets as a hostess/deli-slicer at several locations throughout Delaware County.  She always greeted customers with a smile and friendly "hello."  From 1954-1972, besides being a homemaker, raising three children and working full-time, Dorothy also found the time to breed, raise and sell pedigreed Cocker Spaniels and Boston Terriers.

She loved poetry and began to write her own poems at age 12.  Dorothy also wrote numerous letters to senators and representatives, both state and federal, about various political and social issues and those concerning international affairs.  For a woman born in 1922 and having only a 9th grade education, she was rather progressive.  Over the years, approximately 85 of Dorothy's "Letters to the Editor" were published in the Daily Times.    She was strong-willed and willing to debate anyone regarding her views and convictions.  Dorothy would have continued writing to the Daily Times, but for a variety of physical problems, she was unable to do so.

Dorothy and her husband, Harry, enjoyed spending time with friends and family and relishing experiences with all the wildlife at their home in Arrowhead Lakes in the Pocono Mountains from 1980-2001.  She and Harry also enjoyed their visits to North Carolina to see their daughter, Pat and her husband, Gene, their seven grandchildren and later on, several great grandchildren.  Christmas was such a special time at the Hayworth household.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Harry J. Paulley, who died July 12, 2003; her daughter, Patricia A. Hayworth (Eugene H.); her grandson, Michael Craig Paulley, who died in 1996; her siblings, Muriel L. Mortimer (Richard "Dick"), Robert D. Watts (Florence "Floss"), Marjorie L. "Margie" Watts and William H. "Bill" Watts; her brother-in-law, William "Bill" Lines; and her former daughter-in-law, Eileen A. Golembiewski.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Michael J. Paulley and Harry E. Paulley (Marie "Bunny"); her sister, Sara Lines, the family historian; her sister-in-law, Helen Watts; along with, ten grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren; also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.  What a family!
