Staff Sergeant, Daniel Samter Levy, age 68, died peacefully at his home in Flourtown, PA on Friday, December 29, 2017 after a sudden illness. Dan, as he was known by all, born on December 4,1949 was the son of Richard Langsdorf Levy, Esq. and Suzanne Samter Levy of Philadelphia. Always kind, good-hearted, and persistently positive, Dan was loved by all who knew him.
An accomplished and avid athlete, Dan grew up in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. He was a graduate of Roxborough High School and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences (now Jefferson University). Dan served in the U.S. Army for 21 years, stationed throughout the country and around the world.
After his retirement from the Army, Dan remained active and committed to various veterans' organizations and church groups. Giving back to those less fortunate was part of Dan's everyday routine. He was a volunteer at the Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard in Ambler, PA., twice a week for the past ten years and he participated in various food donation programs at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. Never one to rest on his own laurels, Dan also spent summers working as a camp counselor at the Water Tower Recreation Center in Chestnut Hill. Dan's deep faith was the fulcrum of his life. He belonged to the congregations of Cornerstone Church of Skippack, Rock of Israel and Tenth Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. Dan's dedication to his faith also led him to mission service in Brazil and Greece.
He is survived by his brother, William R. Levy, his sister-in-law, Rhonda Jones Levy, his niece, Britt Jones Levy, his nephew, Thomas R. Levy and his first cousins, Wendy Samter, Jill S. Glazer and David A.Thanhauser.
The Levy family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staffs of the Critical Care Unit of Pennsylvania Hospital, Bayada Home Healthcare and the Pennsylvania Wissahickon Hospice. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard, 150 N. Main Street, P.O. Box 367, Ambler PA 19002 or the Ronald McDonald House, 3925 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
