Obituary

Cynthia Jo Mullaney, 71 of Norfolk, VA died February 16, 2020.

Born in Chester, she was raised there and in Ridley Park, living in Virginia Beach, VA and the surrounding area for most of the past 33 years with five years in San Antonio, TX.

Cynthia was a graduate of Ridley Park High School, class of 1966 and earned a Master's Degree in Communication from Regent University in 1989 and a Bachelor of Arts from West Chester University in 1984.

She was employed by USAA from 2002 to 2014 as a customer service representative who consistently delighted members with her compassion and ability to solve problems.   In unsolicited letters to USAA leadership, members described her as friendly, patient, helpful, knowledgeable, supportive and "absolutely superb."

Cynthia also worked for the United Way of South Hampton Roads, Norfolk, VA, Philadelphia Phillies, the Insurance Company of North America and was the sole proprietor of multiple small businesses.

Cynthia was very compassionate and helpful to others. In addition to the empathy she demonstrated in her role at USAA, she looked for opportunities to make others' days a little brighter, from close friends and family to random strangers. She loved caring for children and was active in children's ministry. She often dedicated her time to solving food insecurity among members of the community. And in one of her most kindhearted endeavors, she was her father's full-time caregiver in the last years of his life. Our world was a much better place with Cynthia in it.

Cynthia was an active member of multiple houses of worship including Big House Church in Norfolk, New Life Church in Virginia Beach and Narberth Presbyterian Church in Narberth, PA. Her immense love, gratitude and grace-motivated obedience in every facet of her life gave evidence to her being a true follower of Jesus Christ.

Predeceased by parents William A. "Bing" Hewlings and Shirley Minshall Hewlings and brother William Robert "Robi" Hewlings.

Survived by brothers David W. Hewlings (Linda Thiel) of MA and Jeffrey M. Hewlings (Barbara) of Fleetwood, PA, nieces Dana Miller, Emily Hewlings and Leah Hewlings, nephews Bill Miller (Joy), Justin Hewlings (Michelle) and Aaron Hewlings (Naomi), grandnephew Jackson Bing Hewlings, aunt Dorothy Oronzio and many loving cousins.

A spirit-filled Christian memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Big House Church, 1420 Colonial Ave, Norfolk, VA 23517. Cynthia requested that all who attend bring a can of food for the church pantry and would like us all to "be generous out of your own need and remember the Lord will always take care of you."

Burial is private at Lawn Croft Cemetery in Linwood, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big House Church Benevolence Fund, 1420 Colonial Ave, Norfolk, VA 23517.
