Chauncey DeWitt Scarbrough, Jr., born in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania on May 28, 1931, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025. He was the son of the late Chauncey DeWitt Scarbrough, Sr. and Flora Williams Scarbrough. The second of six children, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Frances (Weidner) Scarbrough; his sisters, Ruth Pici and Janet Lundberg; and brother, Wesley Scarbrough. He is survived by his sisters, Carolyn Warren and Marjorie Alcorn both of Columbus, Ohio; his partner of 10 years, Linda Hayes of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina; and his three sons, Paul and his partner Matthew Erikson, Carl and his husband Derek Walther, Eric and his wife Katie Harris Scarbrough; and his four grandchildren Sean, Sarah, Emily and Rachel Scarbrough.
Chauncey grew up in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, where he attended the local elementary, middle and high schools, graduating from high school in 1949. After graduation, he worked at Westinghouse Air Brake Company until August 1952, when he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War, working as an interior communications technician and electrician. He was discharged at Philadelphia in 1956. During his service, he met and later married Frances Weidner in November of 1955. He attended Drexel University, earning a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and then returned to complete a master's degree in business administration. He and Frances moved to Ridley Park, Pennsylvania in 1960, where Chauncey later went to work as a Customer Service Engineer in the Product Support Group at the Vertol Division of Boeing Aircraft Company, and where they raised their three children. During his 33 years at Boeing, he traveled extensively on company business including to Vietnam, Thailand, Iran (where the family lived for a year in 1971-72), Italy and Great Britain. He took an active role in his sons' educations and activities, including serving as the Scoutmaster of their Boy Scout troop. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking. After he retired in 1995, he and Frances traveled extensively in Europe. Chauncey also got involved in local politics, serving a term on the Borough Council in Ridley Park.
After Frances passed away in 2011, Chauncey had the good fortune to embark on a second chapter of life when he met Linda Hayes, then of Secane, Pennsylvania. The two met in 2014 when they were assigned to work together with the Meals on Wheels program at the Schoolhouse Senior Center in Folsom, Pennsylvania. In 2016, they moved to Fuquay Varina, North Carolina to be closer to Linda's family. They enjoyed exploring their new home state of North Carolina, as well as traveling to see other parts of the United States. Chauncey joined the American Legion and was very active in the Honor Guard at Post 116 in Fuquay Varina.
A visitation will be held at Thomas Funeral Home in Fuquay Varina, North Carolina on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 5:00 PM, with a service immediately following at 6:00 P.M. White-Luttrell Funeral Home of Ridley Park, Pennsylvania will conduct final interment at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania with a brief graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Heart Association.
