Albert F. Bulik, 97, a longtime resident of Ridley Park who volunteered with Meal on Wheels for many years, died peacefully Sunday at Granite Farms Estates, Media, PA.
He was born in 1922 in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia, to Joseph and Marie (Hobor) Bulik. A graduate of Northeast High School, he trained as a tool and die maker at General Electric and spent much of his career as a manager for Avery Corp., making specialized printing presses.
A proud Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served with the Second Division on Saipan, saw action on Okinawa and did occupation duty in Nagasaki, Japan.
His marriage to Anne (O'Connor) Bulik was as loving as it was long -- they celebrated their 70th anniversary on April 15.
Al was active in St. Madeline's Church, Ridley Park, as a lector and Eucharistic minister. He coordinated the Ridley unit of Meals on Wheels for 25 years, and served as president of Ridley Park Young at Heart.
After retirement, he became an avid gardener, baker and home brewer. His gingerbread cookies were the delight of friends and family; he dubbed his favorite home brew concoction "Connors' Old World Irish Stout."
A good-natured gentleman of the old school, he always greeted family and friends with a smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eyes.
He enjoyed spinning fanciful tales about the hardships of the Great Depression. "We only got 10 Cheerios apiece for breakfast," he told his grandchildren (Cheerios hadn't been invented yet.) "We were so poor that the six of us had to share one skate."
Despite a voracious appetite (and daily helpings of ice cream), he never seemed to budge above a trim 180 pounds.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Louise Anne (Lou Anne Bulik) of Ridley Park, Pa.; a son, Mark Bulik, daughter-in-law Barbara Hennessy, and two grandchildren, Annie and Jack Bulik, all of West Caldwell, N.J., and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by five siblings, Edith Janda, Joseph Bulik, Margaret Longshore, Richard Bulik and Alice Staudenmayer.
